Captured Vicksburg July 4, 1863 Held as POW @ Gratish Street Prison, St. Louis, Camp Morton

Died of Dropsy (Edema) at 7:30 AM Sunday at house at 912 East Main Ave. Came to USA at the age of eleven. Remained in NY City a little more than a year then came directly to east Tennessee with father who became one of the founders of the German Colony at Wartburg, TN.
Charles came to Knoxville in 1858 and established a lumber company. His property was partly destroyed by Union during civil War. He joined CSA in 1863 (see above) Returned after war rebuilt lumber plant - quiet that and went to work for East Tennessee & Georgia RR -quiet then founded the first exclusive furniture store in Knoxville. After five years his health began to fail. He turned to real estate being interested in considerable coal property.
