Virginia Joyce Ellison was born on the family farm south of Renville, Minnesota, on August 25, 1925, to Odean and Lillian (Jacobsen) Peterson. She was baptized at Opdahl Lutheran Church of Sacred Heart, MN, and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church of Renville, MN. Joyce graduated from Renville Public School in 1943. She worked on the family farm as a child, after graduation she worked in the shipyards in Portland, Oregon, during WWII, where she met her future husband Alvin L.B. Benton. She also worked for Edwards Valve Co. in East Chicago, Indiana, earned her beauty license and practiced as a beautician for many years. Following that she worked at U.S. Steel in which she retired in 1982. After retirement she worked for the Mulligan family as a nanny from 1987 to 2010.
Virginia Joyce married Alvin L.B. Benton on October 11, 1945, in Silver Bow County, Montana, and Ronald E. Ellison June 13, 1973, in Indiana. Virginia Joyce's life was centered on family, church and helping others. She loved life. She was very active in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gary, IN. She had an amazing love for cats, traveling, making hangers and kitchen towels. She returned to Minnesota in 2011, always the home where her heart resided and lived in assisted living. Virginia Joyce passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in the nursing home in Renville, MN on October 8, 2015.
Virginia Joyce is survived by her children, John and Tom; her two grandchildren Aaron and Matthew; and her one great-grandchild Oliver.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Alvin L.B. Benton of Roselawn, IN; Ronald Ellison of Portage, IN her stepson, Bruce Ellison of IN; her brother David O. Peterson and sister- in-law Marge of Renville, MN.
