NOTES AND NEWS.
One of the most pleasing features of the Mathematical Tripos this year is the placing a townsman among the Wranglers. Mr. Thomas Alfred Brock, a son of one of the readers of the Pitt Press, received his early instruction at the Higher Grade School, under the direction of Mr. Iliffe, and gained the reputation of being the best mathematician the school ever had. There is no doubt that his position in the Wranglers would have been higher if he had gone straight from school to college, but even as it is, he has given an example of the keenness with which those who are not among the most fortunate in their position in life take advantage of the educational advantages offered to them.

In 1896 Thomas went missing for a few days and an advert was placed in the local paper on 25th December.
