Ilion, Jan. 7 - Alonzo A. Rivers, Ilion's last surviving Civil War veteran, died Monday night in his home, after a brief illness. He would have observed his 95th birthday Saturday.
He was born in Troy, the son of Pierre and Clarissa Frazeau and came to Ilion about 1867.
He married Martha E. Steele in Ilion Sept. 2, 1868.
Surviving are a son, Eugene and a daughter, Miss Lena Rivers, both of Ilion.∼Husband of Martha E. Steele. They had five children: Alonzo/Lorenzo Rivers (born c. 1870), Eugene D. Rivers (born c. 1871), Lena R. Rivers (born April 1875) and Louis S. Rivers (1877-1915); and another child who had died by the time of the 1900 census.

In addition to the GAR, Mr. Rivers was a member of Ilion Lodge 591, F. & A. M. For years he was honorary commander-in-chief of Memorial Day services there.

Ilion—Alonzo A. Rivers, Ilion's lone surviving Civil War veteran, was honored by veterans' organizations and friends yesterday on the occasion of his 92nd birthday.
Commander Rivers, who is also the only surviving commander of Chismore Post, GAR, will be visited by a delegation of members of Crim-Shaffer Post, American Legion, according to action taken at a post meeting, and he will be presented a gift.
Commander Rivers is still in good health despite his advanced years and is a frequent visitor at Masonic Temple. He joined the Army in Chicago during the Civil War and served as a cavalryman in the ninth Illinois Regiment under General Cook and under the late Brigadier General Harper.
Chismore Post, GAR, was organized in 1868 and Commander Rivers took an active interest in the organization during its tenure. For nearly 30 years Rivers was foreman of the profiling job at Remington Arms Company. He retired several years ago to make his home with his daughter in South Third Avenue.
