Jay was born in Poteau, Oklahoma June 16th, 1930. He was the second eldest of seven siblings. The family moved to Arizona when he was around 14. In 1947, he lied about his age in order to join the United States Army. He was only 17, and now had the ability to send money home to his family in Arizona. Honorably discharged after a three year stint in Korea as a Jeep mechanic, he was later drafted for a second tour of duty in Korea in 1951 then served in the Army Reserves from 1953-1956. Jay married his teen-age sweet-heart, Evelyn Dowell, in 1953 and had three children. He later worked as a professional carpenter at O'Malley's and later as foreman at Kapp Cabinets in Phoenix where he retired in 1992. He also served as President of his local union. Additionally, Jay enjoyed spending time with his family, rebuilding old cars and old houses, as well as long road trips to Oklahoma and Texas to visit family. He also enjoyed traveling to California, Seattle, Hawaii, Alaska, and Mexico!
Jay is preceded in death by his son Terry Jay Barnes, parents Henry and Malisse Barnes and brother Carlson Barnes.
