Raymond Rickey "Rick" Alm, born May 19, 1948, died February 16, 2017.

Born in Oak Lawn, Il, Rick grew up in the classic way of Boy Scouts and pick-up baseball games, with little brother in tow. He graduated from Harold L. Richards High School in 1966 and from Western Illinois with a degree in journalism, in 1970. He joined the U.S. Army in 1972, serving 3 years; one in Ft. Lewis, WA and two years stationed in Germany. He lived the majority of his adult life in Blue Springs, MO, making one final move to Hutchinson, KS in his last few years to be closer to grandchildren.

His life profession was journalism, and colleagues describe him as a "reporter's reporter." Known for his cutting wit, relentless pursuit for the truth, and the ability to make the "comfortable uncomfortable." Rick always got his story, and believed there was always a story to tell, and truth to uncover. His efforts earned him awards and accolades throughout the years, among those a Pulitzer Prize, though he rarely discussed it, because it was never about the awards, just a job done well. Always the reporter, he was prepared for any situation, and never left the house without his notebook and pen handy in his pocket. A constant friend, while pursuing the story, he still always had time to teach and help a colleague. "He was the tide that raised all the boats."

While his life's work was journalism, his life's love was family. He was the solid rock of organization, research, and preparation all could depend on. He loved well, and showed it often through simple, thoughtful gestures. A devoted father and grandfather, Rick's happiest moments were always when he was surrounded by family.

He was known to many as Coach, on the softball field, through his many years managing softball. He was a sports enthusiast, coaching or cheering on his kids from the bench or the bleachers. Baseball was his passion and he spent decades watching baseball in person, on television, or through ear phones, listening to games on the radio. Nobody could surpass his baseball knowledge. His life's pursuit of knowledge made him an avid reader, often devouring multiple books of different genres at a time. Reading about the world translated into travel, and he and his wife Melanie spent decades cruising and traveling the world together.

Also a reluctant animal lover, he had various pets over the years, Melanie brought them into the home, but he ultimately welcomed them as family. He leaves behind Daisy, his constant companion and best friend, who brought him much loyalty and love the last years of his life.

He is survived by: his four children, Larry and Randi Kay Graham, Wichita, KS, Amy and Patrick Fluck, Hutchinson, KS, Meagen Alm, Portland, OR, and Sarah and Jared Weber, Orange City, IA,; ten grandchildren, Ender, Eli, and Ella Graham, Ethan, Graham, Jackson, and Sydney Fluck, and Beau, Emma, and Joslyn Weber. He is also survived by his brother, Don Alm and wife Kathy, Pontoon Beach, IL. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Melanie, and his parents, Raymond and Audrey Alm.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501. Please visit www.elliottmortuary.com to leave online condolences for Rick's family.
