He came with parents from Cape Cod, MA to Port Hood Island, NS in 1786. David was among the first land holders in Mabou. Tradition holds that the Smiths pastured cattle on the meadows of Hillsborough before they moved to the Mabou area. He lived for 55 years in Mabou, NS, on land north of the Canadian Railway Station at Glendyre.

When his brother, Parker, died, he went to the funeral, took sick and died. They were buried in the same grave as their mother in Port Hood Cemetery.
