She was aged 93y11m9d when she died. Born in York Co., PA to parents Zephaniah and Hannah Underwood. The family later moved to Bald Eagle Valley, Centre Co., PA. Jane was a staunch member of the Society of Friends. She married Jacob Downing, of Half Moon Valley, Centre Co., on April 11, 1838, and they had 9 children, 5 of whom lived to adulthood. Hannah M., the oldest, died in May 1894. The others were: Rebecca S. Merritt, Maria M. Romine, Matilda J. Underwood, and Joseph J. Downing. Her husband Jacob died June 9, 1862. In 1868 she sold her property in Centre Co. and moved to Ohio. She was a member of the Miami Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends and was an elder in that organization.
