Sara Catherine Watts Caldwell, age 86, passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Duke Raleigh Hospital.

Born September 18, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Catherine Reid Eckard Watts and John Warren Watts.

Sara was a lifelong resident of Catawba County where she attended Hickory High School and graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College. She taught elementary school (mostly 5th grade) for 35 years, serving Kenworth Elementary in Hickory from 1952 to 1968, and from 1968 to 1988 she taught at Newton Elementary and South Newton Elementary.

Sara was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Newton, NC. She was also a charter member of the Gamma Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and a member of North Carolina Retired School Personnel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Edmond William Caldwell and brother-in-law, John Wilson Caldwell, Jr.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Edmond (Eddie) W. Caldwell Jr. and wife, Julia; daughter, Catherine Caldwell Cox and husband, Robbie; four grandchildren, Will Cox and wife Heather, Martha Cox, MaryClaire Caldwell and Caroline Caldwell; sister-in-law, Sara Smith Caldwell; nephews, John Wilson Caldwell III and wife, Lynn, Kevin Smith Caldwell and wife, Susan.

The family would especially like to thank Donna Price, Becky Hicks and Kim Boston for their loving care of Sara which allowed her to live at home during her later years.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Newton with Rev. Lara "Willis" Greene officiating.

Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, NC.

The family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 300 North Main Avenue, Newton, NC 28658.
