Everette H. Mayes, 93, of Myrtle Beach, SC, formerly of Wilkesboro, NC, passed peacefully on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at the Brightwater Retirement Nursing Center in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Mr. Mayes was born on October 27, 1921, in Surry County, NC to William and Maude Isaacs Mayes. He was employed as the director of purchasing at Gardner Mirror Company in North Wilkesboro, NC from 1969 until his retirement in 1992. He had been previously employed as purchasing agent and assistant secretary/treasury at Galax Mirror Company in Galax, VA, from 1946 to 1969.

Mr. Mayes was a member of Little River United Methodist Church in Little River, SC for the last 3 years. Previously, he had been a member of First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro, NC from 1969 to 2012. He had also been a member of First Christian Church in Galax, VA from 1947 to 1969.

Mr. Mayes was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II from 1940 -1946. He was stationed on the battleship, the USS Pennsylvania, at the bombing of the Pearl Harbor naval base on December 7, 1941. Mr. Mayes was a proud Pearl Harbor survivor, and he gave frequent talks and presentations about the sneak attack at Pearl Harbor at schools and other organizations throughout northwest North Carolina. He also served as the last President of the North Carolina Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Barbara Leonard Mayes, and his second wife, Virginia Craft Tomlinson Mayes, and his son, Everette Harrison (Harry) Mayes II.

He is survived by three daughters: Christina Mayes Neal and husband, Larry of Greer, SC; Jane Mayes Link and husband, Eddie of North Myrtle Beach, SC; Cynthia Mayes Taylor of Chapel Hill, NC, and his daughter-in-law, Diane Henderson Mayes of Wilkesboro, NC. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; Patrick Link (wife, Alexis), Benjamin Link (wife, Emily), Christopher Link (wife, Diana), Jonathan Neal (wife, Yuko), Stuart Neal, Syntha Lee (husband, Corey), Edward Mayes (wife, Nicole), Zachary Taylor and Morgan Taylor, as well as 12 great-grandchildren.

A Service of Remembrance was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at Little River United Methodist Church in Little River, SC. A Memorial Service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2015, at First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro, NC.

A graveside service with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 Honor Guard will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 12 Noon at Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro, NC.

Mr. Mayes donated his body to the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either First United Methodist Church, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659, or Little River United Methodist Church, Little River, SC, 29566.
