Darrell proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II, during which he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart, and captured, spending several months in a German POW camp, an experience he often spoke of and wrote about. He remained in the service through the Korean and Vietnam Wars rising to the rank of Master Sergeant before retiring from the Army in 1972. Following his retirement from the Army he began working for the U.S. Postal Service and in later years he worked as a bus driver for the Farmington R-7 School District. He was a long-time and faithful member of the Farmington First Baptist Church.
He enjoyed “piddling” and was a very good and resourceful handy-man, planning and completing many projects for family, friends and church over the years.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of over 56 years, Dorothy (Orlando) Watson of Farmington; two children, Daniel A. (and Linda) Watson of Pensacola, Florida and Dorene A. (and Mike) McCrackin of Lake St. Louis; two grandsons, Daniel J. (and Amanda) Watson of the State of North Carolina and Dale M. McCrackin of Lake St. Louis; a brother, Clarence O. (Wanda) Watson of Festus; a sister, Oneida Crader of St. Louis; and numerous other relatives, dear friends, neighbors and his dear church family.
