Mrs. Birchel Mae Pope, 98, of Barbourville, passed away Monday evening, February 20, 2017 at her home. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Birchel and Sue Mae Green Campbell born on April 7, 1918 in Barbourville.

Birchel attended Barbourville Baptist Institute and Union College where she was active in music and drama. She was a Christian and the oldest living member of the First Baptist Church Barbourville having professed her faith in Jesus Christ as a nine year old. In earlier years, she was active in her church where she taught Sunday school, worked in vacation bible school, sang in the choir and was a member of the Sarah Hughes Circle. She worked as a medical secretary for Bituminous Casualty Insurance Company, a bookkeeper for Dr. W. P. Clifton and Dr. T. R. Davies at the old Logan Hospital. She was also a secretary at the First Baptist Church. She was a former member of the Barbourville Younger Woman’s Club and a Kentucky Colonel.

She enjoyed reading, music, cooking and baking. Her deep and abiding faith in God and her devotion to her family are a testimonial to her life.

On March 11, 1943, she united in marriage with Carlos B. Pope and to this union a daughter was born.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Carlos B. Pope and her sister, Helen Joy Singleton.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Joe Pope of Barbourville; a brother-in-law, George R. Pope Jr. of Crossville, TN; several cousins; among other loved ones and dear friends.

Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Friday, February 24 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Shane Nickell officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Don McKeehan, Robert T. Melton, Steve Smith, Clevis Carter, Doug Warriner, Mark Bolinger, John Hauser and David Hopper.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday between 6 and 8 P.M. and Friday prior to the funeral hour.
