Author, Poet. She was the recipient of a Newberry Award for her penning of the children's book "A Visit to William Blake's Inn" (1981). Her father was a professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan, she was encouraged by her parents to find an interest in reading and writing at an early age. She studied at the University of Michigan and went on to earn her Master of Arts from Stanford University. She received her PhD. from Michigan and took a position as a Creative Writing Professor at Vassar College. She initiated her writing career with her collection of poetry "In His Country: Poems" (1966). It would be the birth of her son which inspired her to write children's books, beginning with "Sailings to Cythera and other Anatole Stories" (1974). During the course of her career, she wrote numerous novels which include "The Highest Hit" (1978) and "Things Invisible to See" (1984). She died from natural causes.
