Margaret Blaine Damrosch was the daughter of Secretary of State James Gillispie Blaine and Harriet Stanwood Blaine. Her father served as a US Senator, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Secretary of State under three Presidents and was the Republican candidate for President of the United States in the 1884 election. (narrowly losing to Grover Cleveland) Her parents had a summer home in Bar Harbor Maine called "Stanwood" also known as Blaine Cottage. It was here in 1889, that her future husband visited. A year later, Margaret and famed Conductor Walter Damrosch were married.
They had four daughters; Alice, Gretchen, Polly and Anita. Blaine Cottage would eventually become the Damrosch Family's summer home. Sadly, in 1947 it was lost in a great fire that burned many of Bar Harbor's landmarks. Margaret was involved with the Women's National Republican Club, Colony Club, Board of Directors of the Town Hall Club and Musicians Emergency Fund. In 1918, her nephew Walker Blaine Beale was killed in battle in France.(World War I) With Margaret's support, her sister Harriet Blaine Beale donated their parents home in Augusta Maine to be used as the Governor's Mansion in Walker's memory. The Blaine House is located across the street from the Maine State Capital. Margaret and her sister Harriet worked tirelessly to preserve their father's memory after his death. They took an active part in making sure he received proper recognition for his many accomplishments especially in the area of the Pan American Conference and his efforts pertaining to US foreign policy.
She died at the summer home of her daughter and son-in-law Gretchen and Thomas Finletter in Bar Harbor, Maine on July 28, 1949. She was 82 years old.
