CAPT James R. Iversen, Sr., USCG (Ret)
March 25, 1924 ~ February 15, 2017 (age 92)

CAPT James R. Iversen, Sr., USCG (Ret), 92, of Naples, FL died February 15, 2017. Born March 25, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the second son of the late Albert H. and Loraine G. (Davis) Iversen of New London, CT.

Although Jim grew up in New London, CT, he always remained a Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Yankees fan. As the quintessential homegrown New London boy (whose father was a New London policeman for 25 years and a Niantic, CT deputy sheriff), Jim attended local grade schools in New London from 1929 to 1937 then attended Bulkeley High School in 1937, graduating in 1941. He was a member of the Bulkeley football team. He was also a ‘fifer’ in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 189 Fife and Drum Corps and participated in many competitions, parades, and other occasions.

During high school vacations, he worked as an ordinary seaman on the excursion boat, the SS Westport; thence for the U.S. Forestry Service as a logger; and for the Railway Express Company unloading freight trains.

Following graduation from Bulkeley High School, he attended and graduated from Admiral Billard Academy in New London in 1942; received a principal appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1942 but instead, accepted an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Academy in 1942. He graduated from the USCG Academy (USCGA) in 1945 (Class of 1946) with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering.

Upon graduation from the USCGA, he married Eileen Maud Shaughnessy of New London, CT on June 6, 1945 in the CG Academy Chapel.

During his 33 year Coast Guard career, following his graduation from the CG Academy, Jim served on several Coast Guard (CG) Cutters and Buoy Tenders on sea duty for three years. Following these tours of duty, he was selected for flight training at the U.S. Naval Air Station (NAS), Pensacola, FL in August of 1948.

He graduated from single engine flight training in May of 1949; he received Navy and Coast Guard aviator wings. He was then transferred to NAS Corpus Christi, TX for multi-engine seaplane training. He graduated and received wings in July of 1949. He was transferred to the USCG Air Station in Elizabeth City, NC in August of 1949. His duties primarily were qualifying in various types of fixed wing aircraft on Search and Rescue (SAR) missions. He qualified in and flew single engine aircraft, multi-engine land planes, multi-engine amphibious planes and seaplanes. In August of 1951, he received orders to attend Helicopter Training at Pensacola, FL. In November of 1951, he received his helicopter wings and returned to the CG Air Station in Elizabeth City, NC for duty. Subsequently, he performed helicopter SAR duty on the Ohio and thence the Missouri Rivers. In September of 1952 he was transferred to the new CG Air Detachment in Bermuda. His primary SAR duties while stationed in Bermuda were intercepting and escorting civilian passenger aircraft with engine failures to safe landings.

While stationed in Bermuda, his son, Jams R. Iversen, Jr. and daughter, Robin E. Iversen were born at Kindley Air Force Base (AFB) in 1952 and 1953 respectively. From Bermuda, he was transferred to Chanute AFB in Rantoul, IL in April of 1955 for Aircraft Maintenance Officer’s Training. He graduated in September 1955. He was transferred to USCG Air Detachment located on the U.S. Naval Station at Sangley Point, Republic of the Philippines to serve as a SAR pilot and Aircraft Engineering Maintenance Officer. In addition to SAR, detachment duties were to provide logistics services to five remotely located Long Range Navigation (LORAN C) stations.

In November of 1957, daughter, Wendy D. Iversen was born at the U.S. Navy Base Hospital in the Philippines. In January 1958, he was transferred to USCG Air Station St. Petersburg, FL to serve as SAR Pilot and Aircraft Engineering Maintenance Officer. In October of 1958, daughter, Shawn L. Iversen was born at the Mound Park Hospital, St. Petersburg, FL.

In August of 1961, he was designated Aircraft Maintenance Representative for the Southern Region with office at the USCG’s Seventh District office in Miami, FL. In August of 1963, he was transferred to the USCG Aircraft Repair and Supply Center (ARSC) in Elizabeth City, NC to serve as Aircraft Overhaul and Repair Officer and ultimately as Executive Officer. His duties were managing the overhaul process of HU16 amphibious aircraft, HO4S and HH52A helicopters. He was also the chief test pilot for all overhauled aircraft.

In July 1966, he was transferred to USCG Air Station, San Diego, CA to serve as Executive Officer. In July 1968, he was transferred to Washington, DC to attend the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) at Fort Leslie J. McNair and The George Washington University.

He graduated from ICAF in July of 1970 and from The George Washington University in August 1970 with a Master of Science degree in Business Administration. In September of 1970, he was transferred to USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC to serve as Chief of the Applied Technology Division in the CG’s Office of Research and Development (R&D). In September of 1973, he was transferred to Seventeenth CG District Headquarters in Juneau, AK to serve as Chief of Staff. On July first, 1975 he retired from the USCG as a Captain with 33 years of active duty service.

In civilian life, he served as Executive Director for the Washington DC Metropolitan Subcontractors Association (MSA) – which during his tenure, grew to include approximately 280 subcontracting firms as members serving the DC area. His duties were: membership recruiting; publishing an annual membership directory; planning and holding an annual ‘Subby’ Awards Banquet for about 700 attendees; conducting the annual MSA Golf Tournament; and lobbying for subcontractor beneficial legislation in Congress, in the Virginia and Maryland Legislatures and in the DC Council. He also served on DC Mayor Walter Washington’s Minority Contractor’s Committee. He retired from MSA in May of 1999.

After retirement from the USCG, he and Eileen purchased a condominium in Naples, FL then downsized by selling the home they had lived in in Mclean, VA for 31 years. They then purchased a condo in Tysons Corner, VA. With homes in both Naples, FL and Mclean, VA, they became ’snowbirds’ spending their winters in Florida and their summers in Virginia. Jim’s avocations were: repairing and maintaining homes and cars; watching movies and sporting events; fishing; playing golf, and utilizing his computer skills to manage his finances, email and surf the Internet.

He will be dearly missed by his family and all those whose work and lives he influenced including his beloved wife of 71+ years, Eileen Maud (nee Shaughnessy) Iversen; his children, James R. Iversen Jr. (Carol), Robin E. Iversen Hill (Lee), Wendy D. Iversen (John Washington), and Shawn L. Iversen; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; and sister, Ann Beaulieu. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Eileen Maureen and his brother, Albert Warren Iversen.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 8th, 11:00 AM at Fuller Funeral Home, 4735 Tamiami Trail East, Naples, 34112. A luncheon reception in Jim’s honor will follow. Final committal will be at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
