Screenwriter and Film Director. Son of a theater director, he was associated with the theater from a young age. He began his career as an actor, but quickly decided to become a director in the new media of film. His first directing efforts were for the Literaria Films company in 1913. He also began to work as a script writer. After World War I, he moved to German film giant UFA. At first active in making huge epic dramas such as Quo Vadis with Emil Jannings, which failed, he found his niche with light comedies, in particular with his second wife, actress Marika Rökk, who he married in 1940. Due to his film work during World War II, he was temporarily banned from working after that war, even though one of his 1933 movies was banned by the Nazis. He was rehabilitated in 1947 and worked in West German films until 1960. His daughter with Rökk, Gabriele Jacoby, is a well known Austrian actress.
