Joseph's first marriage was to Mary Alice Slagle December 25, 1878, in Putnam County, Tennessee

Joseph, his wife, Mary; children, Anna and Etta, joined his sister, Lousinda Elizabeth (Pippin) and her husband, Marion Grimes on a journey between 1883 and 1885, from Putnam County, Tennessee, to Kansas. Arthur and Lucille were born as they awaited the opening of the Indian lands in Oklahoma Territory which occurred in April 1889. Joe filed a homestead of 160 acres in Kingfisher County, Oklahoma. Mary died when Lucille was about a year old. She was the first person to be buried in what is now known as Grimes Cemetery. Joseph relinquished his homestead claim and returned to Putnam County, Tennessee, with his children.

His second marriage was to Sarah J. McBroom January 5, 1892, in Putnam County, Tennessee
