James D. Merkel, age 85, of Renville, died Sunday, July 27, 2014, at the RenVilla Nursing Home in Renville.
James D. Merkel was born on May 18, 1929, in Gaylord, Minnesota, to Frank and Ellen (Allanson) Merkel. He grew up in Gaylord and graduated from Gaylord High School in 1947. Jim continued his education at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.
Jim was united in marriage to Ardyce Voigt on February 11, 1950, in Mankato. Upon graduation, Jim and Ardyce moved to Alden, Minnesota, and Jim taught school there for two years. They then moved to Renville and he taught music at Renville Public Schools from 1953 until his retirement in 1984. Following retirement, Jim would occasionally substitute teach and he also helped Ardyce in her gift shop. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Renville.
Survivors include his children: Greg, Nanette and Nathan; his granddaughter Jenny, his sister ClaraLee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ardyce, and his brothers: Don, Jack, and Jerry.
