William E. "Bill" Downs, age 79, of Warsaw, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2006, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on August 15, 1926, in Lesterville, Reynolds County, Missouri, the son of Richard and Rosa Byrd Downs. At the age of 15 the family moved to Hermitage, Hickory Co MO where Dick had family. Bill attended school in Weaubleau and graduated from Hermitage High School in 1944.
Bill married Lois Campbell of Winona, Shannon Co MO on 24 May 1947 at Eminence, Shannon Co MO, and they had one son, Billy Joe, born 19 Aug 1948. Bill and Lois divorced on 19 June 1948 before Billy Joe's birth and she returned to Winona where she later married Don Barkley and raised four other children.
Bill married Elleonora Klindworth on August 2, 1952 and they made their home in Hermitage where they raised their family of two sons and three daughters.
In his early years, Bill was a truck driver. He and his wife, Elleonora, owned the Hermitage Locker Plant from 1959 until 1976. He was also employed by the Hermitage School District as a bus driver. For a number of years, Bill was employed at Pitts Homes, Inc. In 1996, Bill and Elleonora moved to Warsaw.
His son Billy Joe from his previous marriage came to live with his family about 1962, where he worked at the Locker Plant with his father and attended high school, graduating in 1966.
Bill was devoted to his family. He enjoyed woodworking and had made many wood treasurers for his children and grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Rosie Downs, and his son, Billy Joe Downs on May 4, 2005.
Surviving is his wife of 53 years, Elleonora, of the home, two sons, Jerry Downs, and his wife, Kathy and Gary Downs, and his wife, Marsha, both of Warsaw; three daughters, Karen Hessel, and her husband, Ed, of Kearney, Missouri, Janice Warner, and her husband, Ron, of Archie and Sandra Hohmann, and her husband, Brian, of Kansas City, 15 grandchildren, including Donnie Joe Downs, son of Billy Joe and Carmen Pummill Downs, of Kansas City, MO; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Dickenson of Columbia, Missouri and Adeline Hicks, and her husband, Jack, of Sedalia, several nieces, nephews, and many other caring relatives and friends.
Funeral services for William "Bill" Downs will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Elder Alvin Stevens and Rev. Diana Loomis officiating. Burial will be in the Hermitage Cemetery, Hermitage, Missouri, Pallbearers will be Keith Hessel, Michael Schnakenberg, Jesse Kellner, Jeremy Parrish, Randy Downs and Doug Stevens. Honorary Pallbearers will be Nathan Warner and Kevin Hessel. Visitation was held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials were requested to be made to the Hermitage Cemetery, United Methodist Church Scholarship fund or the American Heart Society in care of the funeral home. Arrangements were by the Reser Funeral Home.
