1774 Rivera-Moncada Expedition
José Miguel Espinosa y Lugo was born at Villa de Sinaloa, Sinaloa, New Spain (México) about 1773. He was the son of Soldado José Joaquín Cayetano Espinosa y Lugo and María Serafina Lugo y Espinosa. He came to Alta California with his widowed mother in 1774. Miguel enlisted as a soldado de cuera at Monterey about 1790 and had been promoted to sargento by 1815. He married María Gabriela Higuera y Redondo (SCL Baptism 00335) at Mission Santa Clara May 20, 1795 (SCL Marriage 00573). Miguel died at the Presidio of Monterey and was buried in the Presidio Cemetery July 3, 1815 (SC Death 02130).
