Polly Sue Killion Smith, of Lindale passed away on February 19th, 2017. Polly was born on September 12th, 1939 to Walter Ferrell Killion and Pauline Bane Killion, in Starrville, Texas. Polly graduated from Winona High School in 1957. She then attended and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Home Economics from North Texas College (currently, North Texas State University), in Denton, Texas. Polly was the first person in her family to obtain a college degree. Upon graduation, Polly’s parents gave her a red 1961 MG, in which she zipped around East Texas, as a young single teacher at Winona High School.

It was around that time that her brother, Buddy Killion, introduced her to Wright Smith. Wright and Buddy worked together as pharmacists in Tyler. Wright and Polly were married on November 23rd, 1961. In 1962, they moved to Lindale, Texas, and opened Lindale Pharmacy (later renamed Smith’s), and had their first daughter, Kimberly. Polly and Wright were co-owners of Smith’s Pharmacy for 30 years. During that time, they extended their business by opening stores in Van and Mineola, Texas. Together, they shared the demands of business ownership along with those of a growing family. In 1965, they had their second daughter, Pheobe, and in 1968, their last daughter, Kathryn. Polly and Wright raised their daughters in the drug stores, it was pretty common to see a playpen in the store, or a little later, to find one of their daughters zooming around the store on pedal cars.

Polly loved being from East Texas and she loved the community that opened their hearts to her in Lindale. Polly was involved in many community activities. She was a founding member and past president of the Lindale Garden Club. She was a charter member and president of the Lindale Chamber of Commerce. She joined the Lindale First United Methodist Church in 1962 and also served on the board of directors.
