Robert Gerald “Jerry” Coyle died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on February 11, 2017. He was 88 years old. Jerry was born on January 2, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to parents, Anne (nee Grace) and Raymond Coyle.

A native Detroiter, Jerry graduated from Cathedral Elementary School and Catholic Central High School, class of 1947. After graduating high school Jerry continued his education at the University of Detroit Mercy where he played baseball as an undergrad. Jerry graduated from U of D Dental School in 1955.

Jerry proudly served as Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy.

Jerry practiced Dentistry in Detroit, his beloved city, for over forty years. He practiced in the David Whitney Building from the 1950s until the 1990s. In addition to his love of family and baseball, Jerry ran over forty marathons. He ran his first marathon in 1969 and his last in 1992. During those years, he often ran three marathons a year. Some of his marathons included the Boston Marathon, Detroit Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and the Nanisivik Marathon which was north of the Arctic Circle. Jerry also enjoyed the many activities of his children and grandchildren.

Jerry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Jerry is survived by his loving children, Robert Coyle, Thomas (Elise) Coyle, Patrick (Cynthia) Coyle, Jerry (Marianne) Coyle, and Mary Lou Coyle and his cherished grandchildren Hanley, Charles, Connor, Gerald, William, Michael, Elizabeth, John, Henry and Oliver. He is also survived by his siblings, Ray (Audrey) Coyle and Edward (Ann) Coyle and many nieces and nephews. Jerry is preceded in death by his beloved wife Marian and his brothers John (the late Margaret Mary) Coyle and the Honorable James (the late Sharon) Coyle.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lake Shore Road, Grosse Pointe Farms, Saturday, February 18th, at 12noon. Friends may visit Saturday at church beginning at 11:30am and Friday, February 17th at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) from 4-8pm. A sharing of memories service will be held Friday at 7:30pm.
