Shirley Gage Benton was born on August 24, 1926 in Fort Braggs, Oklahoma. In 1941 Shirley and her family came to California. She was a 1945 graduate of Porterville Union High School. In 1946 she met Gene Gage in a malt shop; they fell in love and married a mere three months later. Together they lived in Pixley until 1956 when they moved back to Porterville. They raised two daughters together, Rosemary McDonald and Paula Weaver. She worked for several years in the local area, at the Pixley Justice Court, as the credit manager at Sears for 12 years, and as the manager of Jones Hallmark. In 1978 her husband Gene passed away. Shirley enjoyed 20 years of happy marriage to Clyde Benton until his passing in 1999.
Shirley loved to shop, go out to eat, and claimed that her proudest accomplishment was her family. Shirley is survived by her daughters Rosemary and husband Mark, Paula Weaver and husband Gary. Stepdaughter Cherie Brooks, husband Jerry and their children. Grandchildren Kimberly Johnson and husband Loren, Mark McDonald and wife Michele, Christopher Weaver, Kacy McCallister and husband Todd. Great grandchildren Taylor Saia and husband Nick, Madalyn McDonald, Gage and Witten Weaver. Preceded in death by her parents Archie and Cova Fryar, sister Sue Benton and brother Dean Fryar, first husband Gene Gage and second husband Clyde Benton. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00am Friday, February 17, 2017 at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
