Constantine II, the son of Áed, was an early King of Scotland, known then by the Gaelic name Alba. His reign of 40 years was dominated by the actions of Viking rulers in the British Isles. He was remarkable man and a great survivor, undoubtedly one of the greatest of the early Gaelic Kings.
In 943, Constantine abdicated the throne to his cousin Malcolm, the son of Donald, and retired to the Céli Dé (Culdee) monastery of St Andrews. He eventually was to become the Abbot of St. Andrew's and died there in 952.
