Pvt. Francis M. Daggett, 19, of Co. C Second Marines of the Fifth Amphibious Corps, was killed in action Feb. 22 on Parry Island in the Marshall Islands. His platoon was in the first landing wave on the island. Pvt. Daggett enlisted in the Marine Corps on Jan. 9, 1942, and trained at Paris Island and New River before being sent overseas. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Asiatic-Pacific campaign medal, and the victory medal. He was initially buried in the temporary American cemetery on Japlan Island, Eniwetok atoll, until his body was returned to Syracuse on May 8, 1948.

Pvt. Daggett was a communicant of Most Holy Rosary Church, and a graduate of Most Holy Rosary High School. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Daggett; by his maternal grandfather, John F. Unz, with whom he resided; by his paternal grandmother; by five uncles, Lt. Frederick Unz of the Army, William and Floyd Unz of Syracuse, and George and Roswell Daggett of Albany; and by an aunt, Mrs. J. Martin Hanlon. A prayer service for Pvt. Daggett was held at Most Holy Rosary on March 31, 1944; funeral services were held there on May 9, 1948, after which his body was interred at St. Agnes Cemetery.
