Gene passed away Monday, March 11, 2010 at home, surrounded by his wife of nearly 55 years Charlene , his daughter, Karin, his son, Karl and oldest granddaughter, Laura . He was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer last July.
Born May 24, 1929 in Pyote, TX. They moved to CA living in Weed, Edgewood and finally Yreka where Gene graduated from Yreka High School in 1947. He joined the Navy after graduation and attended Radio Electronics school at Treasure Island, San Francisco, CA. He served in the Korean War aboard the Carrier USS Princeton and the USS Essex. He was honorably discharged from the navy on August 7, 1951.
Gene graduated from City College San Francisco in 1956 with an AA followed by a BS in Electrical Engineering from San Jose State College in 1959.
Son Michael Buffum preceded him in death in 2006.
Gene is survived by his wife Charlene, daughter Karin Boehler of Holland, Michigan, son Karl Buffum of Anderson, CA, granddaughters Laura and Katrina Boehler of Holland, Michigan, nephew Gary Buffum of Lyle, WA, brother Jack Buffum & nephew Andy Buffum of Redding and niece Airenne Buffum of Portland, OR. In addition to numerous cousins and his extended family, Sonny and Sue Thomason of Anderson, CA, son Randy Rains, wife Kris, grandchildren Clay, Connor and Sammy of Placerville, CA, daughter Evie Pellegrini , husband Mauro and grandchildren Igor and Beatrice of Redding.
Gene was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Redding. A registered CA Professional Engineer.
Gene was an Electrical Engineer and worked in various countries during his career in Operation (start-up) and Maintenance in hydro power plants associated with switchyards. The USBR at Folsom, Trinity, Keswick and Shasta dams. Dow Chemical in Freeport, TX. Pahalavi Dam, Iran International Engineering /SF, Rio de Janeiro, San Luis, Paso Real, Brazil and Guatemala Gene and Charlene had a consulting business for 5 years before he retired in 1994.
Gene was the Buffum Genealogist for the BFA. His passion was planting redwood trees at the Buffum homestead. He also enjoyed fishing, reading military history and telling stories.
There will be no services, a Celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
