Joan was an active member of Lady Elks and aided her husband during his State Senator years in Jerome, Idaho until 1962 which then took them to Billings, Montana. In 1969, Art and Joan bought an A&W drive-in located in Parker, Arizona. They resided there until 1978 and then retired to Phoenix. Retirement led to spending winters in Phoenix and summers in Montana on the farm enjoying time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2007, they returned to Montana and resided in Shepherd near their daughter and son-in-law.
