OBITUARY: Henry Martin Sherman was born at Keen, New Hampshire, Dec. 7th, 1842, and died at Coupeville, Island Co., Wash., May 16th, 1902, aged 60 years. Mr. Sherman's early manhood was spent in the peaceful and healthful occupation of farming until the civil war, when he promptly responded to the call for volunteers, served his country four long years and returned broken in health at the close. Railroading was his next occupation for 28 years; during this period he was wedded to Miss Fannie F. Flesher two surviving children are the issue of this marriage, Rosa and William. The deceased died in the home this son, who is a very highly respected young married man and farmer of this community. A brother, from Everett, also waited on him during his sickness. Mr. Sherman came to Whidby Island about six years ago and during this time earned and maintained the respect of all who knew him. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, a firm believer in salvation by Christ and sanctification by the Holy Spirit; he delighted to witness for Christ and to recommend His salvation to all. For him to live was Christ and for him to die was gain. Mr. Sherman suffered ill health during the last eight years of his life and from severe pain during his brief prostration. To one who said: "It must be hard to bear such pain." he replied: "Yes, but it is only for a moment, then the glory will be forever." "Tis hard to break the tender cord When love has bound the heart; 'Tis hard, so hard, to speak the words: 'Must we forever part?' "Dearest loved one we have laid thee In the peaceful grave's embrace, And they memory will be cherished Till we see thy heavenly face."
