During the Civil War, Henry served with Company G, 2nd Vermont Infantry. He enlisted May 7, 1861, and mustered in on June 20. He reenlisted in January, 1864, and reported missing in action May 18, 1864. He was found 8 days after having been wounded. His leg had to be amputated, but he died a few days later.
He was buried with military honors in St. Joseph Cemetery on June 23, 1864.
A death and funeral announcement was published in the Burlington Weekly Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) on July 1, 1864
