Mary Lou (Johnson) Allen, age 81, died Saturday, January 20, 2007 at Windcrest Alzheimer's Care Center. A graveside service at Elmwood Memorial Cemetery will be held on Tuesday, January 23rd at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at First Central Presbyterian Church with Dr. Clifford Stewart officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Community Memorial Funeral Home, 1443 N. 2nd St.

Mary was the beloved wife of Gene Allen for 56 years prior to his death in 2004. In addition to rearing a family, the couple enjoyed square and round dancing, traveling with friends and serving others through the church and community.

Mary graduated from Hendrick School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and worked for J.N. Burditt, M.D. the majority of her nursing career. As of just a few years ago, as a resident of Windcrest, Mary was quick to note the needs of others and sought to be of assistance by pushing a wheelchair, calling a nurse, or simply offering a sympathizing gesture.

Mary was one of the first volunteers for Meals on Wheels and served continuously for more than 20 years, before it became necessary to give up her route due to illness. Often she was accompanied by a grandchild, niece, or other family member, who recognized her joy of serving in a variety of ways that included taking flowers to shut-ins, baking bread for first-time visitors, and assisting with Vacation Bible School.

Mary was born and reared in Shackleford County and attended school in Albany(1943 Graduate of Albany HS) before moving to Abilene where she lived the rest of her life.

Mary is remembered for her kindness, dedication, and the many ways she fulfilled her role as a devoted wife and mother. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents, Carl Johnson and Minnie Price. Carl Johnson was the son of W.W.Johnson & Margaret Jane Polk Johnson. Carl is a "second cousin, 3rd generation removed," from President James K. Polk ancestry line.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald and his wife, Betty, of Tucson, AZ, Curry and his wife, RaeNelle, of Ovalo; a daughter, Janice Six and her husband, Gene, of Abilene; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a brother, Rodney Price and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations my be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 903, Abilene, TX 79604; Windcrest Alzheimer's Care Center, 6050 Hospital Dr., Abilene, TX 79606; or First Central Presbyterian Church, 400 Orange St., Abilene, Tx 79601.
