Matthew, whose parents lived in Deerfield, MA; was the first white child born in Fort Dummer Brattleboro, Vermont.Served in the French and Indian Wars. While on a scout near Lake George, NY he was taken captive by the indians to Canada, run the gauntlet and made his escape by hiding three nights and two days in a hollow log. Settled in Greenfield, MA. In old age he came to Leyden, MA to his sons.
