Richard (Dick) R. Guillemette, 74, a lifelong resident and businessman of Sanford, died peacefully with his family by his side, on February 13, 2017 at his home.

Richard was born in Sanford on February 1, 1943, the son of Roger and Domitille (Melanson) Guillemette.

Dick and his wife, Claire Sylvain, met while attending St. Ignatius High School. They were married at Holy Family Church on May 2, 1964 and were blessed with four children. Dick worked alongside his father in the upholstery business before starting Guillemette Flooring in 1974. His business acumen and love of people made it easy for Dick to grow the business with good ole fashioned service. Working side by side with his wife Claire, they became a united couple not only with the business, but with raising their children. Even when Dick was stricken with MS, he still worked the phones and then on the computer, keeping their clientele’s needs met. He had high standards and eventually his two sons, Steven and Mark joined the family business. Dick was active with the Sanford Elks and generous with his time and talents.

Dick loved to play golf. He played at Province Lake Golf Course and was a regular at Cape Arundel Golf Course in Kennebunkport. Dick was a dyed in the wool Republican who was very active within the GOP party. During many campaigns, he and Claire were delegates and they had the honor of meeting three Presidents, Ronald Reagan, George, Sr. and George W.

In 2003, Dick purchased a van that would once again provide him his freedom! He and Claire traveled extensively to visit family in New Orleans and enjoyed the many sights and historical events in Washington, DC. As a country music buff, he went to see some of his favorite performers in Nashville, Tennessee and enjoyed the warm ocean breezes of Florida. In the summer months, He and Claire would pack a lunch and drive down to Kennebunk beach; to watch the tourists, the dogs running on the beach and the night would not be complete without a ride out to Walker’s point.

Dick kept his musical talents within his family, playing the banjo and harmonica. He loved listening to Jazz and Country music. It was not unusual for Dick to pick up the grandkids and take them all out for ice cream. He would always make room for his Sweet Caroline, his Shih Tzu grand dog, which provided comfort and companionship. Dick was a devote Catholic and he attended Mass at St. Martha’s in Kennebunk and was a longtime parishioner of St. Ignatius. He and Claire enjoyed watching movies in their home and always maintained an open door policy for their kids and many friends. Many years you would find the neighborhood kids swimming in the pool in the back yard.

Richard will be remembered for being a loving husband and proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was never happier than when his family and friends got together for the holidays. He has now entered into eternal rest.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Claire Guillemette of Sanford; his children, Steven and wife Connie of Sanford; Mark and wife Stephanie of Waterboro; Karen Gould and husband Terry of Sanford and Jay and wife Karen of Cape Cod, MA; his six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his sister, Cecile Giguere of Sanford; and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Theresa of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, 66 North Ave., in Sanford followed by a reception at St. Ignatius Reception Hall. Committal prayers and burial will be later in the spring at St. Ignatius Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurses Assoc., 50 Foden Rd., Portland, ME 04106.

The Autumn Green Funeral Home in Alfred is respectfully handling arrangements.
