John Blakely “Little John” Hilgers passed away, Friday, February 10, 2017 after a six year courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma.

John is survived by his wife Jan who spent the last year being his primary caregiver during his struggle with this difficult disease. He is also survived by his former wife Reba and their son Matthew (wife Heather, grandson Vincent) and their daughter Blakely Scott (husband Aaron). He is also survived by his father, William B. Hilgers, his sister Sara and brothers David (wife Joan) and Paul (wife Nancy). John was also uncle to three nieces, Kelly, Lauren and Sydney and one nephew John. He was preceded in death by his Mother Sara Lamun Hilgers whom he loved dearly. He also leaves behind a host of cousins and lifetime friends.

Growing up, John was a gifted athlete. He lettered in both football and basketball at Del Valle High School and was a guard and the kicker on the team that lost to Kountze in the State Quarterfinals. John attended McMurry College in Abilene, Texas where he was the football mascot.

John was also a man of God. He was a leader in the Hays Praise Emmaus Community and was dedicated to sharing God’s unconditional love and healing grace. He was a proud Lay Leader for many years.

John’s great avocation was golf; and oh what a good golfer he was. A proud student of Harvey Penick, he developed a special gift for teaching and for playing. He was the owner of the “Riverside Golf Center” which was the premier driving range in Austin in the 70’s John played golf his entire life and qualified for the Golf Channel’s Amateur Tour’s National Championship two years in a row even after he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.

John may have been known as “Little John”, but he was a larger than life personality. He never met a stranger and had an infectious energy that energized everyone around him. The family thanks John’s friends that supported him during his battle with cancer. He will be missed by all who were blessed to know his true and loving spirit.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the Save Muny Fund at www.savemuny.com.
