Born in Ireland, James immigrated to the United States around the age of nineteen. He is first documented in Pennsylvania.

By the early 1800's, he had made his way to the new Mississippi Territory. By 1803, he had met and married Catherine Armstrong, whose father James Armstrong had been transferred to Natchez with the U.S. Army only a few years earlier.

Two years later they welcomed their only known child, a daughter they named Jane (after Catherine's sister Jane Madison Armstron) Eliza (after Catherine's mother Elizabeth "Eliza"). Jane Eliza would live from 1805-1884.

James owned land on Fairchild Creek in Adams County, Mississippi - this fact is documented in the Natchez Court Records. It is assumed that they lived there.

After his death in 1819, his widow Catherine married again. Her second husband was Sgt. John Bacon with whom she had one child, Emeline. After Emeline married and moved away, Catherine moved in with her sister Jane Armstrong King's family in Claiborne County, MS - that explains why Catherine alone of her family is buried with all of the King family at Buckhorn Plantation.
