MRS. LEONARD S. SHAFFNER

MIDDLETON, Dec. 4 - Friends and relatives in Middleton and outside points learned with deep sorrow of the passing of Mrs. Leonard S. Shaffner at her home here. In apparently good health, the news of her sudden passing came as a distinct shock to all.

The former Bessie Ann Smith, Mrs. Shaffner was a daughter of late Lavinia (Neily) and George T. Smith of Kingston, and was born 72 years ago. Mrs. Shaffner was of a kingly and genial disposition and enjoyed the friendship and respect of a wide circle of friends. Her husband, for many years a prominent businessman of Middleton, predeceased her several years ago.

She was a devoted member of the United Baptist church, and an active member of Myrtle Rebekah lodge, of which she was past noble grand.

Mrs. Shaffner is survived by three children: Mrs. Ralph Hawes of Somerville, Mass.; Mrs. Eugene Porter and C. Willard Shaffner, both of Middleton. Also surviving are two brothers, Fred D. and Archibald T. Smith, both of Kingston, and four sisters, Mrs. G. W. Andrews of Middleton, Mrs. A. H. Hilton and Mrs. Wallace Piggott, both of Kingston, and Miss M. Hobson Smith of Kentville.

The funeral was held from the home on Bridge Street, and in the absence of her pastor, rev. E. J. Chisholm, through illness, the service was conducted by Rev. A. B. Higgins assisted by Rev. R. W. Lindsay of Margaretsville. Interment was at North Kingston. Pallbearers were six nephews: E. R. Piggott, Kingston; J. E. Shaffner, Bridgetown; E. F. Shaffner, Annapolis Royal; G. L. Andrews and K. C.
