Dr. Branch was born in Lumberton, N. C, May 16, 1888, of the late John A. and Mary Breece Branch. June 15, 1915 he and Mary Parker were married. Their two daughters are Mary (Mrs. R. G. Bourne) and Jacqueline (Mrs. Robert Burrage).

He was educated in the public schools of his county and attended Oak Ridge Institute from 1808-10. He graduated from Atlanta Dental College in 1913. Attended North Carolina State College from 1925-29. He was a visiting staff member at Forsyth Dental Infirmary in 1923. He entered private practice in 1913 to 1922 and again from 1927-28. Since that time he has conducted the affairs of the Division of Oral Hygiene of the North Carolina State Board of Health. Dr. Branch has worked out a plan of dental education that is recognized in dental, educational and public health circles as a most successful and effective program. He directs a staff of dentists who go into the public schools teaching mouth health to the children in the classrooms and making necessary dental corrections for the underprivileged children. To train these dentists for their work. Dr. Branch established in 1936 an Institute of Public Health Dentistry at the University of North Carolina, the first of its kind.

The Division of Oral Hygiene, under the direction of Dr. Branch, has contributed three North Carolina Firsts: The first Oral Hygiene program of its kind, the first school for training public health dentists, and the first building to be used exclusively for a State Dental Health Program.

Dr. Branch is a member and past president of the North Carolina Dental Society; past president and member of the American Association of Public Health Dentists; past president and member of the North Carolina Public Health Association; president State and Territorial Dental Directors at the present time. He has served as chairman of the Oral Hygiene Section of the American Dental Association and was appointed a member of the Maternal and Child Health Advisory Committee to the Children's Bureau of the U. S. Department of Labor under Secretary Perkins from 1936-38. He served as president of the Fourth District Dental Society 1928-29.

Much could be said of the literary contributions Dr. Branch has made and his many other accomplishments, but space will not permit. We salute you Dr. Branch, and may you continue to have happiness and good health for many years to come.

From The Greensboro Record, Greensboro, N. C., Wed., Dec. 3, 1958 - Dr. Ernest Branch Passes In Raleigh After Long Illness.
Raleigh, Dec. 3 - Dr. Ernest A. Branch, 70, who headed the Division of AOral Hygiene in the State Health Department for 29 years, died today after a long illness.
Funeral will be held at the Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh at 10 a. m. Friday and burial will follow in the Meadowbrook Cemetery at Lumberton at 2 p. m.
More than 20 years ago, Dr. Branch created "Little Jack's Puppet Show" which taught thousands of Tar Heel youngsters and children in other states throughout the nation to take care of their teeth.
Dr. Roy Norton, state health officer, commented that 'no man in this country ever made a greater advancement to oral hygiene as a part of the public health program than did Dr. Branch'.
Dr. Branch, a native of Robeson County, is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Robert Bourne of Raleigh and Mrs. Robert Burrage of Concord; two half-sisters, Mrs. D. N. McGill and Miss Ruth Branch of Lumberton, and a half-brother, Braxton T. Branch of Lumberton.
