On February 12, 2017, F. Wray Joyce of Eden, NC, departed his earthly bounds to be reunited with his beloved wife, Janie, in the kingdom of heaven. A man with a jovial and gregarious manner, he packed many accomplishments into his 84 years and made a positive impact on thousands of lives. His was a life well lived. Wray, known to many as "Baby Wray," was born in Mayodan at the height of the Great Depression. He was loved and nurtured by his mother Ruby Orr Joyce Kivett, his grandmother Ella Sue Frances Wray Orr, grandfather "Big" John Orr and his uncle Will Wray. He attended Mayodan High School and after serving his country in the United States Armed Forces, he attended Greensboro College. He spent his life in Mayodan and Stoneville, with later years living in Eden. Wray counts the greatest day of his life as the day he married Janie Hawkins. He said all his married life that no other woman could have lasted with him other or been more perfect a life partner than she. She loved him beyond measure and he returned that love. Together they demonstrated the magic of true love and commitment. Their life was blessed when daughter Julie was born to them in 1961. They loved her, nurtured her and gave her every opportunity within their power to give. They were truly phenomenal parents. Wray particularly instilled in his daughter his passion for history and politics, the historical significance of current events, a love of fine automobiles, horses, sports, the University of North Carolina Tarheels and the altruistic conviction that we should work to improve the lives of others. Wray and Janie were further blessed when granddaughter Alexandra arrived in 1992. She was a light in their life and the apple of their eyes. Gramps, as he was known, could not have been more proud of her, particularly the day she graduated with honors and distinction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Wray spent his career in the insurance industry, working for such venerable companies as Hartford, United Guaranty and American International Group. But his most rewarding accomplishments came as a servant to his community. He served in Elliott Duncan PTA, M-M Saddle Club, Mayodan Town Council, Eden Moose Lodge and member of Mayodan First Baptist Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner and member of the VFW. His willingness to lend a helping hand to others was boundless. He leaves behind his daughter, Julie Joyce Talbert and husband Andrew; grand-daughter Alexandra Talbert; sisters-in-law Kelly Hawkins and Ellen Hawkins; many nieces and nephews, special companions and vast community of friends. A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 18, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Mayodan. Lunch and visitation will be from 12 until 2 p.m., funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Inurnment will follow at Stoneville Municipal Cemetery with military rites provided by the Rockingham Count Honor Guard and North Carolina National Guard. The family will receive visitors at other times at the home of Julie Talbert. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UNC-Chapel Hill athletic basketball program. Colonial Funeral Home in Madison is serving the family.
