Richard "Dick" Tucker, 81, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017 of kidney failure and bladder cancer.

He was born in Englewood, Kansas, to Elmer and Florence Gail (Walker). Along with brothers Gene and Don, he spent his youth working at his father's grain elevator or his mother's flower shop. He kindly deposited skunks in the Stafford movie theatre on Halloween and pushed over more than his share of outhouses. He was a proud Kansas Jayhawk, served in the U.S. Navy, and earned his doctorate in Education from Emporia State.

While living in West Des Moines, Dick was a long-time member of the St. Timothy's vestry, Des Moines Choral Society, and served as president of the Council for Exceptional Children.

He worked for Heartland Area Education Agency between 1975 and 1999.

Dick enjoyed his retirement years in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where he joined the Catholic Church. As his health began to fail, he moved to Waukee and enjoyed leading a Bible study on behalf of St. Boniface at the Villages of Legacy Pointe.

His fondest memories include house boating on Saylorville Lake – and endless hours of pulling Laurie behind the ski boat, rebuilding Lisa's smashed car, performing at Carnegie Hall with the DM Choral Society, taking Molly and Erin shopping at Claire's on early-out days, riding his Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 along most of Route 66, performing in dozens of performances with the Lake Havasu City Community Theatre, shooting cans in the desert with Brandon and Garrett, buying 1,019 books for his Kindle, and napping with his cats … all named "Jiggs."

He leaves behind daughters, Lauren Kratz (Gordon) and granddaughters, Molly (Clayton) and Erin Bramble. And Lisa Fisk (Alan) and grandchildren, Jenny (Courtney) Padgit, David (Lea) Fisk, Brandon Eick and Garrett (Kayla) Fisk. Also, his brother, Don (Jean) and sister-in-law, Sandra (who always reminded him of Marilyn Monroe); his three favorite nieces and his three favorite nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gene, favorite dogs, Chadwick and Beauregard, and too many others to mention because he lived such a long and wonderful life.

A Catholic funeral will be held at the McLaren's Chapel at Resthaven (19th & Ashworth Road in West Des Moines) on Friday, February 17, at 1:30 p.m.

Rather than sending flowers, please do something today to enrich the lives of two children who aren't related to you – donate books, pay off two overdue lunch accounts at a local school, or volunteer at a food pantry.
