He served with Company "C" Lake Swamp Volunteers as a private in the Civil War. He was wounded in the Battle of Murfreesboro/Battle of Stones River. Ava was pregnant with his son Alex when he enlisted for service in July of 1861 at Camp Marion near Georgetown, South Carolina. He never returned to see his youngest son Alex. He is buried in the mass grave with his fellow soldiers.
