news article 'Was Born Into Slavery - Dies At Age 100' Born a slave on a Virginia plantation, 100 years ago, last March, shortly before inception of the Civil War, Charles Sephfus, retired coal miner, passed away at 4:00 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs Bertie Mayle of Chesterhill, Rt 2. The parents of Mr Sephfus, owned by their master near Christianburg, Va, continued to reside in him employ, following emancipation and the termination of the Civil War. When the parents passed on, young Sephfus came to the Ohio country and for years was employed in the coal mines about Sharpsburg, until retirement. In 1894, he was married to Malinda Goins who died in 1950. Two daughters, Malinda with whom he made his home, and Mrs Jessie Nichols of Sharpsburg; five sones, Clifford and Earl, Columbus; Howard, Chesterhill Rt 2; Harley of Sharpsburg and Henry of Weston, West Va; 15 grand; seventeen great grand and two great-great grandchildren are living. Funeral services were held at the Mt Hermon church at 2:00 pm Tuesday with interment in the churchyard cemetery. === Minerd.com Pauline Kennedy married the son of a former slave. At the age of 16, on New Year's Eve 1933, she wed 29-year-old widower Howard "Judy" Sephfus (1904-1967), a native of Athens County, OH and the son of Charles and Malinda Alice (Goins) Cephfus or "Cephas" (variant spellings). According to an Ohio newspaper article, "The parents of Mr. Sephfus, owned by their master near Christianburg, Va., continued to reside in his employ, following emancipation and the termination of the civil War. When the parents passed on, young Sephfus came to the Ohio country and for years was employed in the coal mines about Sharpsburg, until retirement."
