Arlis James Smith, age 90, of Jasper, Texas passed away at his home on February 14,2017. Celebration of Life Service will be held at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Jasper on Saturday, February 18, 2017 10am with Graveside Service to be held at 1pm at Fairmount Cemetery in Sabine County.

The family will greet friends on Friday, February 17,2017 from 5~8 at Shultz Funeral Home in Jasper.

Born in Fairmount on October 18,1926 to Everett Osborne and Bradie Cassie Clark Smith.

Arlis served in the Navy from 11/9/1943 - 3/23/1946. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 where his position was a Coxswain V-6 USNR. He served on USS OSTARA AKA 33. He was stationed in Honalulu, Hawaii at the time of discharge. He moved to Newton, Texas in 1960 where he was a chicken farmer and a civil construction field supervisor for numerous construction companies in the Golden Triangle area. In 1992 he moved to Jasper, Texas. He retired at 55 and began his own construction, building houses and was a hotel developer for family owned properties. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and served on the building committee over the foundation work. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather.

He is preceded in death by his father, Everett Osborne Smith and mother, Bradie Cassie Clark Smith, his brother Elbert Wendell Smith and his wife Billie Jean Kirbow Smith.

He is survived by his four children Cheryl Dyanne Wilkinson and husband Joe, of Brazoria, Texas, James Michael Smith and wife Ilene, of San Augustine, Texas, Billy Don Smith and wife Laura, and Connie Gail King and husband Danny, all of Jasper, grandchildren, Stacy Hartsell, Jay and Wade Wilkinson, Jason and Scott Smith and Jennifer Tanner, Angelia McCool, Kristin Stegent, Colton Smith and Josh and Tyler Burke, as well as twenty-nine great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Harold Joseph Smith and wife Nelda of Newton, Texas and one sister in law Nan Fernandez of Jasper and numerous nieces and nephews.
