Born at Edinburgh. Worked as carpenter at the gaol in the Chatham Islands; involved in the escape of Te Kooti from the Chatham Islands. Worked as a carpenter in Wellington, and helped to build the Round House on Sommes Island, and the old Government House.

HARDIE.— On the 22nd November, 1906, at 24, Rintoul-street, Robert Hardie, aged 71 years. Private interment. (Evening Post, Nov. 23, 1906)

The death is announced in the Wellington papers of Mr Robert Hardie, at the age of 71. Mr Hardie was father of Mrs W.R. Boyd of Lansdowne. (Wairarapa Daily Times, Nov. 26, 1906)
