Melvin L. Freed, 83 of Danville, passed this life to join our heavenly Father on February 13, 2017 at North Logan Health Care. Visitation will be on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Pape Family Funeral Home from 10-1pm, with a Prayer Service following at 1pm, officiated by Father Loftus. Following services Melvin will be entombed at Resurrection Catholic Mausoleum.

Melvin was born November 28, 1933, the youngest child of Ephraim and Ethel (Harvey) Freed. At fifteen years old he started working for Fairhall Elevator Company in Danville, where he installed, repaired and serviced elevators in Danville and the surrounding areas for twenty-eight years. After leaving there he worked for several years as a bank security guard for First National Bank of Danville, and then at The Danville Housing Authority until his retirement. Melvin was a former member of The Elks, The Moose, and a 4th Degree with the K of C.

Melvin loved riding his motorcycle, was an avid race fan and a mopar man! In the early sixties he ran a stock car at the old Fair Grounds in Danville and several other tracks in the area. He loved family get-togethers, NASCAR, fishing, camping, and mushroom hunting.

He was first married to Norma Jean Urbanski in December 1954, and they later divorced; she survives. He later married Karen Jaylene Borgess Aldrich on November 1, 1975 and she preceded him in death August 16, 1997.

He is survived by his children, who will miss him greatly: Linda (Steve) Bloomfield, with whom he lived, of Perrysville, IN, Buddy (Dee) Freed of Danville, Brenda (Terry) Hollingsworth of Chrisman, and Patrick (Amy Stone) Freed of Decatur; ten grandchildren: Steve Bloomfield Jr. (Amanda Douglas), Samantha (Wade) Rennaker, Cole and Taylor Freed, Katie (Rob) Watters, Kayla and Kade Hollingsworth, Cierra Holstein, and Cheyenne and Shawn Freed; eleven great-grandchildren; and his precious cat Smokey Girl. From his marriage to Karen, he also has two stepchildren: Patricia Collison of Danville and Tim Aldrich of Racine, WI; five grandchildren: Danyel and Damon Collison, Justin, Ryan, and Ashley Aldrich; and four great-grandchildren, whom all survive. He leaves behind one brother Marvin Freed of FL, a special niece Virginia Carmichael of FL, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Karen, four sisters: Cora DeWeese, Josephine Hamilton, Phoebis and Mary Freed; and two brothers: Lee and Gene Freed.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Crystal, Lucy, Darcy, Lori, and all of the 3rd Floor Nurses, CNA’s and employees of North Logan HealthCare for taking such wonderful care of our Dad, along with the nurses and CNA’s on the 4th floor of Presence USMC in Danville, and Transition’s Hospice Groups Aaron, Heather, Jan, and Nicole. We don’t know what we would have done without you. Thank you so much!
