James Asa Laws
December 18, 1943 ~ February 7, 2017 (age 73)
James Asa Laws (Jamie) finished his earthly mission on February 7, 2017 after a lengthy battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Jamie was born December 18, 1943 in Blanding to James Parley and Mariam Laws. He was the second of three children. He spent his childhood living in Blanding and at the family ranch on Alkali.
Jamie attended school in Blanding and graduated from San Juan High School in 1962. After graduation, he attended Southern Utah University in Cedar City, UT.
In the spring of 1964, he met the love of his life, Christine Castor. Jamie quickly proposed and they were married January 13, 1965. They were later sealed in the Manti Temple on March 9, 1974.
Jamie started his career with Utah Department of Transportation on February 1, 1965. He served 30 years for UDOT. His early years were spent in construction while helping to build many roads throughout southeastern Utah, including Interstate 70 from the Colorado state line to Spotted Wolf Canyon.
After being away from home for 18 years, he transferred back to Blanding. Jamie worked the next 12 years in the maintenance division, serving as supervisor for both Bluff and Blanding road sheds. He retired in February, 1995.
After retirement, he went on to work at several other jobs locally, including teaching heavy equipment for CEU for 10 years, driving shuttle and bus for Blackhawk and working in the lab at the White Mesa Mill. He also served as water master for the Blanding Irrigation Company.
Jamie served in many capacities for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. His greatest joy was found while working with the Young Men’s program and serving in the Branch Presidency at the Four Corners Care Center in Blanding for more than six years, four of which were as Branch President.
Jamie enjoyed many simple things in life; a ride in the rain, the smell of freshly cut pine, a good joke, an entertaining story and finding friends everywhere he went.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, hiking and camping. His greatest joy was found within his own family, spending time with his best friend and loving wife, children and grandchildren. Jamie and Christine also opened their home to numerous family members throughout the years.
Jamie is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Francis. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Christine, children Georgia (James) Van Reenen, Edie Laws, David (Candace) Laws and Brian (Kristine) Laws; 13 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and sister Shirley (Ron) Trent.
Funeral services were held on February 11, 2017 in Blanding.
