Allen Edward “Moe” Anderson, born August 3, 1925, in Liberty Township, died peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 12, after a short, sharp decline in his health due to heart failure. A long-time resident of Liberty Township, he lived for the last 4 years as an active part of the community at Pines Village in Valparaiso. As everyone who knew him lately would know, Moe enlisted at 17 in the U.S. Navy, and served on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific during World War II. Afterwards, he attended Valparaiso and Purdue Universities, graduating from Purdue in civil engineering. He married Donna Ruth Linderman in 1951, and after working briefly for the New York Central Railroad, Moe joined his wife’s family business, Linderman’s Nursery, with Donna and her parents Roy F. and Lilah (Hineline) Linderman, all of whom preceded him in death. He grew trees and shrubs for decades, and landscaped many of the homes and businesses of northwest Indiana. He and his wife raised two sons, Scott Allen and Kelly Dale Anderson, of Vancouver, BC and Grand Junction, CO, respectively. Over his life, he served as a founding member and fire chief of the Liberty Township Fire Department, cub master, little-league coach, member of the Porter County Plan Commission, crewmember in several Mackinac sailboat races, and was active in three churches, most recently Heritage Lutheran Church of Valparaiso. Hobbies included rock-collecting and lapidary arts, woodworking, gardening, antique restoration, and building and fixing machines, autos, and tractors. He even learned to enjoy opera, especially when son Kelly was singing it. Later in life he enjoyed reunions with shipmates from the U.S.S. Petrof Bay, and became an avid computer user in his 70s until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Grace (Dillingham) Anderson, four siblings, Edith Anderson, Anagrace DeHaven, Doris Gaines, and Myron Anderson, and by nephews Richard Gaines and Paul DeHaven. He is survived by his sons, their wives, Mary Catherine Kropinski and Elise Helmke Anderson, nieces Jean DeHaven, Barbara (Gaines) Graham, Deloris (Gaines) Martin, Joyce (Gaines) Dugas, John Gaines, Mike Anderson, Pegg Anderson, Jody (Anderson) Nelson, and numerous grand-nephews and nieces.
