THE WATCHER
by Margaret Widdemer (1884-1978)
She always leaned to watch for us,
Anxious if we were late,
In winter by the window,
In summer by the gate.
And though we mocked her tenderly,
Who had such foolish care,
The long way home would seem more safe
Because she waited there.
Her thoughts were all so full of us,
She never could forget!
And so I think that where she is
She must be watching yet.
Waiting till we come home to her,
Anxious if we are late,
Watching from Heaven’s window,
Leaning on Heaven’s gate.

My sister, who I called Susie, always "mothered" folks. As a little sister would, I just thought she was bossy, but over the years I learned.
Marsha Susan was the third of seven children born to Marshall and Phyllis Hinton. It was fitting that she was named after her father because she truly was “Daddy’s little girl” and more like him than any of her siblings.
Born in Benton Harbor Susie would remain in southwestern Michigan her entire life save the few years she resided in Arizona.
I remember our early childhood around the Sister Lakes area. “Wake Up Little Susie,” by the Everly Brothers was popular and that’s when I started calling her “Susie.” She had fond memories of the families and friends.
Then there were the cousins from Grand Rapids. What fun going to the museum and library. Though I was young I do remember something about walking the Fulton St Cemetery wall.
Childhood gave way to those teen years and life’s journey walked Susie down the aisle and into motherhood. Life has a way of taking us where we don’t expect. As always Susie did it her way and stood strong.
