Son of Owen W. Benton and Nancy Ann (Richardson) Benton. John's father died about 1870, and his mother remarried to William F. Cunningham. At this time according to census records, John lived with his grandparents, John H. and Frances Fannie Richardson. He married to Florence Ann Poage July 6, 1887 in Clinton County, Missouri.
John and Florence had three children:
Nettie L. b. Jan 8, 1889
Ray L. b. Jan 25, 1893
Ruby J. b. Sept 5, 1900
John owned a small farm in Gower, Missouri where he built a home for his family. The home still stands on the east side of US 169 Hwy on the north edge of Gower. He and Florence lived here until their deaths.
