Botanist, Physician, and Geographer. After graduating in Germany he moved to Australia in 1847 with his two sisters. Initially he was based in Adelaide and quickly set about exploring the hinterland, but moved to Melbourne in 1851. There he established a deserved reputation for exploring the remoter parts of the State and the country, and he was appointed the Government Botanist of Victoria in 1853. He also served as the Director of the Botanic Gardens of Melbourne from 1857 to 1873. He forged an international reputation for the quality of his work and this is reflected in the many awards bestowed on him by Australian and foreign governments. In his travels he identified about 800 botanic species new to science.
