AUSTINTOWN – Herbert L. Shaffer Sr., 86, died Feb. 10, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Shaffer was born July 14, 1930, in Beaver Falls, Pa., a son of Herbert Jennings and Elizabeth (Davis) Shaffer.
He was a 1949 Springfield Local High School graduate, where he was all Mahoning County in basketball.
He was a Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict.
Herb continued his love for basketball playing all over the world while in the Air Force.
He was a foreman at Ajax Magne Thermic in Warren for 20 years and went on to work at General Motors, where he retired in 1995.
Herb was an avid bowler and loved his cars. His true passion was his home and his family.
Affectionately known as “Pa” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
His wife, the love of his wife, the former Elaine B. Grimm, whom he married Aug. 23, 1956, died July 20, 2009.
He is survived by three daughters, Debra Fleming, with whom he made his home, Cathy (Mike) D’Andrea of Niles, and Cheryl (Ken) Conti of Austintown; six grandchildren, Nicole (Ron) Matthews, Eric Fleming, Jaclyn Shaffer, Kennedy Conti, Michael D’Andrea, and Sara D’Andrea; and seven great-grandchildren, Ronnie, Madi, Zoe, Isaiah, Emme, Sophia, and Juliana.
Besides his parents and wife, Herb was preceded in death by one son, Herb Shaffer Jr.; one brother, Don Shaffer; and two sisters, Thelma Spring and Dorothy McAllister.
Services will be held at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Youngstown.
Friends and family will be received Thursday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
Although flowers are beautiful, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
