Avis Jean Harrison served during World War II, with her mother Myrtle Lena Tyrey Provance, as a defense worker, making primers for bullets and artillery shells in St. Louis, Missouri for the Charter Arms Company. In September, 1943 she married Glen Edward Harrison in Wayne County, Missouri and made their home in St. Louis. In August 1944 Glen Harrison joined the United States Army and served in the European Theater of Operations. He was discharged after the war's end in 1946. Glen and Avis moved to Southern California in 1952. In 1959 Avis was commissioned as a Notary Public in the State of California, a commission she held for nearly twenty years. She also professionally prepared income tax returns and was a bookkeeper for Spencer's Hardware in Moorpark, Moorpark High School and Mires Roadrunner Rubbish Service. In the late 1970s Avis became a special education teacher's aide for the Ventura County Schools at Banyan School in Thousand Oaks, California. In 1990 she retired and moved to Prescott Valley, Arizona, where she lived until her husband Glen's death in 2002. Avis then returned to Ventura, California to live with her daughter, Linda Bowersock, where she spent the next 14 years. Her death occured, peacefully in Ventura at the home of her younger daughter Donna, on April 9, 2016, twenty days short of her 91st birthday. Both her daughters provided round-the-clock care to Avis for dementia in her final years.
Avis Jean Harrison was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was survived by a son, Glen Ronald Harrison, daughters Linda Harrison Bowersock and Donna Harrison-Hess, and another son Randy L. Harrison. She also leaves behind five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
